Chapter One. Snoop and the Professor: Getting Nervous When I Ride in the Car
The Professor and I drove all night from Indiana to Florida to visit Mom in the summer. You see Mom took an important job at Florida State University but the Professor had to stay in Indiana for a while before he could retire. No, I don’t know what retire means. Anyway so now we have two homes, Casa Staten Indiana and Casa Staten Tallahassee. So the Professor and I travel to visit Mom whenever possible. Now honestly I have to tell you that I do not like to ride in the car. I get nervous, I jump from the back seat to the front seat, and I whine and bark a lot. I just don’t like moving that fast and it scares me to look outside the window. On our first trip to Casa Staten Tallahassee, the Professor and I left at night. I think the Professor thought that because it was dark, I couldn’t see outside and I would not be as nervous in the car. It worked a little but I just don’t like to speed up, slow down, stop at a red light or stop sign, and take off and speed up again.
Since I am so nervous when we are traveling, I also have to pee and poop but at first the Professor couldn’t tell the difference between my “I need to pee” and “I need to poop” and “I’m nervous” barks when we were in the car. He put a canvas sheet over the back seat and, you guessed it, after a couple of hours on the road I couldn’t hold it anymore and I peed in the back seat. The Professor was just a bit upset but you know when a Beagle has to go, he has to go! The Professor learned from that experience that he has to stop every two hours and let me out to pee or poop and to walk a little bit. I often have to train the Professor to make sure I get what I want. But I have to admit that I still get nervous when we drive.
