Chapter 9. Snoop and the Professor: The Professor Forgets to Turn Off the Car
I had a great week, as my morning walks with the Professor have gotten longer and longer. We always go by and see Tom Turtle. I bark at him but he always ignores me. I am still not quite sure he is alive. Our walking route has expanded to include another part of the neighborhood. We walk near a golf course, a swimming pool, and a big lake with signs that say “Watch for Alligators.” I am always on the lookout for gators as the Professor calls them. The Professor comes back each morning covered in sweat; Mom said it’s good for him. One morning as I bounded out the door I ran into 4 frogs who were camping out right in front of me. They quickly hopped away. I didn’t follow because I really had to go pee. Did I mention that there are little lizards everywhere? Lizards are rare in Indiana. I bet I see a dozen or more each morning here in Florida. The Professor has decided that I now qualify as a two state dog – a Florida Indiana dog. John called me a Gator-Hoosier dog. I like that.
Mary and John were here until Thursday and Mom and the Professor celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary on Wednesday. I don’t know what a wedding anniversary is. They visited St. George Island one day. I had to stay home. I’m not sure why. They said they couldn’t get my cage in the car with 4 people. Sounds like a fishy excuse to me. They also went to dinner on Wednesday but I wasn’t invited. I’m not sure why, I mean what could go wrong with a Beagle in a restaurant? Anyway, the Professor pulled a classic. You know the Professor is really a smart guy but sometimes he can do some very silly things. Mom has a new car that starts and turns off with a button. They went into the restaurant, had a seafood dinner, and returned to the car to find it still running. They knew it was running because when they opened the car door, the cool air just poured out on them. The Professor had taken the keys with him into the restaurant and had forgotten to press the button to turn off the car. They all laughed and after that, every time the Professor stopped they reminded him to turn off the car. The Professor now announces to everyone that he has turned off the car. The Professor can sometimes be slow learner when it comes to new technology.
Of course, the best thing was that Mary continued to feed me from the table. She really knows how to treat a Beagle. I especially liked the pork loin this week. She and John left Thursday to visit Charleston, South Carolina and some place called Paris Island. John said he had been at Paris Island many, many years ago. He said he had very fond memories of the place. It is where he became a Marine. I don’t have a clue what a Marine is but it is important to John.
It’s Saturday morning. I know that because Mom doesn’t have to work. We had our morning walk and the Professor just took me on another one before lunch. We are having tortilla soup for lunch, which means I get some chicken chunks. He and Mom are going to the Florida State football stadium today to eat and see the new recruits scrimmage. I have no idea what they are talking about. I guess I have to stay home. I will sleep while they’re gone and dream about pork chops on the grill. It really is a great life for this Beagle!
