Chapter 19. Snoop and the Professor: Ducks, Turtles, and Protein 1 Bars
Today was Saturday so I decided to be nice and let the Professor and Mom sleep in. Then at 9am I decided it was time to get up. I sat up and stared at them both in bed and, just like always, the Professor was awakened by my magic thoughts that I sent to him. The Professor insisted on coffee before we went for a walk and I let him. It is always best to let the Professor think he is in charge. Today we walked the long path by the small pond that I discovered the alligator this past summer. No gator today but there were a bunch of Florida ducks. I knew they were Florida ducks because the Indiana ducks I know fly away when I get near. These ducks quacked at me and just waddled into the pond. Yep, definitely Florida Ducks. Thinking of the gator, I decided not to follow them into the pond. After all, I am a very wise Beagle.
The Professor laughed at me and started telling me the story about bubby Josh and the duck that he shot in the back yard of Casa Staten Indiana. I had heard the story at least 50 times, so I didn’t pay much attention to the Professor. The story has become legendary in the Staten family lore. It has all the elements of something destined to go awry…Mom and the Professor visiting friends in Philadelphia; Sarah watching bubby Josh, bubby Ryan, and sissy Anna; Daniel spending the night; and a party at the house. Think about it, what could go wrong? Sometime in the future, I will tell you the complete story.
The rest of our walk was uneventful except for the turtle by the other pond. He was hiding under his shell and I couldn’t get him to come out. I barked at him and pawed at him. I finally got tired and told the Professor that it was time to move on. I will catch that turtle the next time we come this way! When we got home, I took my normal morning nap and began dreaming about bacon.
At noon, Mom and the Professor left to go to the Florida State softball game. I just don’t understand why such a wonderful Beagle such as myself can’t go to these games. Oh well, I decided to get back at them. As I snooped through the house, I found a small box of Protein One Bars on a shelf at my level. I have wanted to get into these for a while now and here was a grand opportunity. You know that I love cookies and I think I told you about getting into the Girl Scout cookies on Valentine’s Day. Well, I struggled to open the Protein One bars. They must be Beagle proof. I finally got one open and chowed down. Well, it was OK, not worth having to open another one and definitely not as good as Girl Scout Thin Mints and Samoas. I was content to take a nap the remainder of the afternoon.
Mom and the Professor came back from the game and the Professor told me the Noles had won. Again, I know what a Seminole is, but what the heck is a Nole? Then Mom saw the evidence of my Protein One Bar snack. I’m not very good at cleaning up my crime scenes. I ran into my cage and strategically decided to stay in there for a while. It has been a good day in Tallahassee.
