Chapter 17. Snoop and the Professor: Christmas Day Continued
I get more beagle treats on Christmas day than any other day of the year. This year Christmas day started at Casa Staten Indiana. I had been up early with the Professor, as usual, because I had to go pee. Mom, Dad, Josh, Anna, Jon, Liz, and Glenn got together around mid-morning to have breakfast, open the gifts in our stockings, and to open gifts from under the tree. I really missed bubby Ryan this year. He had to work in North Carolina and couldn’t make it. He always loves on me and knows I like to be massaged just under my ears.
Now, truth be told, I actually opened one of my gifts the night before. Mom had put her gifts under the tree and my beagle nose went to work immediately. I smelled my gift even though it was in a bag and hidden under other gifts. Yes, it was a reindeer chew/squeaky toy and I knew it was there. So, when Mom and the Professor went to bed, I decided to find it. I dug into the stack of gifts, found Mom’s bag, tore it open and found my squeaky reindeer. Then I proceeded to the bedroom to show Mom and to thank her. Mom and the Professor laughed so hard at me. I love to hear them laugh together.
Breakfast on Christmas morning is a beagle’s dream....sausage, bacon, eggs, sausage gravy, hash browns, and plenty of jam. And because it is Christmas I get to sample it all! Wow, beagle heaven. We then opened our stockings and I was finally able to dig through my stocking. It was full of beagle treats and a bone. I immediately took the bone and put it in a hiding place so that I’m the only one who can find it. You can’t be too careful with chew bones.
We then packed up and traveled to Frankfort for the entire family Christmas Day celebration. It is hectic, loud, and full of people and dogs. We all eat a huge turkey and ham dinner with all the fixings. Yes, the dogs also share in the turkey and ham. Aunt Lila had also invited two people from her church to spend the day with us. We all exchanged gifts. Yes, even the dogs. We all talk, laugh, tell stories, and hug and kiss each other. At the end of the day, I slipped off to a corner of the big room and surveyed the Christmas gathering. Wow, I have the best life a beagle could ever ask for...a big family that openly loves and cares for each other. I sighed and drifted off to sleep.
