Chapter 14. Snoop and the Professor: Why is it Called a Turkey Trot?
Thank goodness my memory is back and things are back to normal. I sat up this morning at about 7am and stared at the Professor and Mom in their bed and, true to form, the Professor was awakened by my magic power of suggestion. I have trained him so very well. I was ready to go for a walk and to re-acquaint my nose with all the wonderful smells that I learned about this past summer in our Tallahassee neighborhood. It was an even better morning because Mom went with us. We walked along the path through the woods and by the small ponds and lakes. No gators to be seen. Thank goodness. No turtles or other critters either, I’m not sure why. Maybe they heard I was coming. I remembered every stop from last summer and even spent extra time at the places where I had to pee.
We finally came out on one of the main roads and it was so busy. Mom said it was the annual Turkey Trot, a 5k, 10k, and 15k race throughout our neighborhood. I had no idea what 5k, 10k, and 15k meant but I didn’t see any turkeys trotting in the street. Now just to be honest I’ve never seen a live turkey, only the cooked ones that Mom makes on Thanksgiving Day. But it was people running through the streets, not turkeys! The Professor said that 5,000 people were running in the races. It was all confusing to me. Why would it be called a Turkey Trot? Why not a People Trot? Let me hear the professor explain this nonsense in one of his classes!
I wanted to go out in the street and give a Beagle greeting to all the trotters but the Professor wouldn’t let me. So, I decided rather quickly that this misnamed “Turkey Trot” was rather boring, so I ignored it and continued my search for new smells along the side of the road. I did get greeted and loved on by several kids who were cheering for the people in the so-called “Turkey Trot.”
We finally got back home and Mom made a breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon, biscuits, and fruit. Of course, the only thing I really wanted was bacon. I must have done something right today because Mom made me an egg with bacon. Yummy, yummy, yummy! Usually only the Professor will make eggs and bacon for me, not Mom, and I’m not supposed to tell Mom when he does. But this handsome beagle is not going to complain when served up bacon!
Later that day Mom, Dad, Josh, and Anna went to thanksgiving dinner at one of mom’s friends named Jennifer. Jennifer works at Florida A and M University. She does what Mom does except Mom is at Florida State. Mom said I couldn’t go, but I didn’t mind as I was full of eggs and bacon and ready to go take a nap and dream about the leftover turkey Mom promised to bring me back from Jennifer’s house. Wow, I really have been a good beagle today. Nap time for this handsome beagle...
