Chapter 11. Snoop and the Professor: Supervising Mom’s Recovery from her Foot Surgery
Mom had foot surgery this past Wednesday and she’s been home since that time. I didn’t get to go to the doctor to watch the surgery. Honestly, I didn’t want to go. I don’t like people messing with my feet. I fuss and even growl at my Veterinarian when he does it, so I was not going to go to see some Doctor mess with Mom’s foot and run the risk that he may want to mess with my feet. The Professor went with her and he was actually able to watch the surgery. Mom was even awake during the surgery. He said the Doctor actually worked on the tendons in Mom’s foot so her big toe will work better. I have no idea what a tendon is, although I do like to lick Mom’s big toes. The Professor thought it was fascinating, but I’m glad I stayed home. No one messes with a Beagle’s feet.
Mom is supposed to stay off her foot for several days and the Professor and I have been helping her. Actually, I’ve been supervising. She has to keep her foot propped up. When she does get up to walk, she’s a bit unstable, so I tend to stay away from her and let the Professor do the manual labor. The Professor has been making lunch and dinner for Mom, although he usually made dinner for Mom even before the surgery. Two nights ago, the Professor made turkey chili. I don’t know what a turkey is, but it tasted pretty good when the Professor let me sample it. They’ve both been working on their computers. The Professor continues to do research on an article and is working on his class syllabi for the fall. I don’t know what a syllabus is. Mom is also teaching a class at Florida State this fall, so she has also been working on her syllabus. They read, play cards and board games, and have been binge-watching 5 years’ worth of Madam Secretary on television. I have never understood the appeal of television. I have been supervising all this activity. Supervision is hard work, so I’ve been taking quite a few naps. When I want to play, I grab my new purple alligator and drop it at the Professor’s feet. He’s pretty good at playing with me when I do that. I have trained him quite well over the years.
It rained a lot over a couple of days this past week. There were large puddles of standing water all over the place that I get to sample on my walks. A couple of times I refused to go out while it was raining. You know I don’t like to walk in the rain, it is beneath the dignity of such a handsome Beagle. I saw two deer on my walks. I didn’t pay much attention to them as I sometimes see deer come up in our back yard at Casa Staten Indiana. Tom Turtle still doesn’t move much, so I believe the jury is still out as to whether or not he is alive. The Professor spoke with the lady who walks Ida May yesterday morning. You remember Ida May, she’s the English springer spaniel. She has way too much energy for me. The lady told the Professor that there’s another Beagle in the neighborhood. I’m not sure I like the sound of that. I’m the top Beagle around here!! Well, I better get back to supervising Mom’s recovery and begging for a treat.
