For my students interested in political economy...I just finished reading Margaret O'Mara's (Professor of History at University of Washington) book The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America. The book highlights the major roles played by the Dept. of Defense and the State of California in the creation and development of Silicon Valley.
