Review of Midnight in Washington: How We Almost Lost Our Democracy and Still Could by Adam Schiff. Congressman Adam Schiff was a federal prosecutor with an expertise in national security matters before becoming a member of Congress from California. While his book serves to some extent as a biography, more importantly it provides the reader with an eye witness view of the recent events that have shaken our democratic experience including the exploitation of events in Benghazi, Russian interference in the 2016 election in support of Trump, the Mueller Report, the two impeachments of Trump by the House, the breakdown of congressional and executive branch norms, and the violent insurrection of January 6. He chronicles the decline of bi-partisanship and the rise of the extreme partisanship that controls the Congress and the country in such a way that has aided in the delegitimization of our democratic institutions and processes. He gives the reader an insider's view to the populist corruption of Donald Trump and he warns us of the dangers that remain in the aftermath of the Trump presidency. The book is most compelling and well written. I highly recommend it.
